On Mental Health Act

The Office of the Chief Psychiatrist provides a number of different sessions on education and training on the Mental Health Act 1996 (MHA).

These sessions include:

Overview of the MHA

A short session giving a basic overview of the MHA and how it relates to the United Nations Principles for the protection of persons with mental illness.

New mental health staff or those who require a refresher.

Consumers and carers who want some basic information

One hour

Exploration of the MHA

A session which goes into some details of the requirements of the MHA

Staff particularly in authorised facilities who need a more detailed understanding of the legislation

Up to 4 hours

Referral Issues and Police Powers

Gives an overview of how a person is referred for examination and how the police may be involved

Medical practitioners, particularly in Emergency Departments, AMHPs, Community staff and police

One hour

Overview for non-authorised facilities

A session giving an overview for staff working in non-authorised facility

All staff in non-authorised facilities

One and a half hours

Management of Community Treatment Orders

Gives detailed information on the management of CTOs

Community staff involved in the management of CTOs.

One hour

Background to legislation and brief overview of MHA

Information session on historical aspects of the legislation and brief overview

University and graduate students. Government and non-government agencies

One to two hours

Review of Skills- Training for Authorised Mental Health Practitioners

Mandatory course for those staff nominated for the role of AMHPs

3 day program

Alternatively an agency or service may request a presentation tailored to the needs of the agency or service.
